“The Renewing of Your Mind” - 5pm The River Service

Aug 23, 2026    The Rev. Billy Cerveny

This sermon asks believers to examine what is shaping their lives, warning that the pressures and patterns of the world can gradually mold us into people we never intended to become, while Christ calls us instead to be transformed through the renewing of our minds. Drawing from Romans 12, it explains that Christian transformation is a progressive work of sanctification in which the Holy Spirit brings the truth of our new identity in Christ deeper into our thoughts, beliefs, actions, and understanding of ourselves. Even the wounds, shame, failures, and false beliefs produced by our past can be rewritten by God’s grace as we learn to see ourselves as His beloved children rather than allowing old voices and painful experiences to define us. Ultimately, the sermon teaches that this transformation is purposeful: God renews and redeems our stories, reveals the unique gifts He has placed within us, and then sends us outward to use those very gifts and even our redeemed brokenness to serve others.
